A letter of condolence from one mother to another
Charles was killed in action at Messines, 7 June 1917.
Extract from this letter
"Dear Mrs Alison, I was so very grieved to read of your son's death. It seems so cruel that the finest of our boys should be called upon to make the supreme sacrifice of their lives. The war is causing so many tragic deaths that I hardly know what to write but I know you will understand how deeply I feel for you in your trouble. The glory of death in battle is a magnificent thing but when it is our own who are killed - almost before they have grown to manhood - that the grief is too terrible. Do please accept our very sincerest sympathy. Faithfully yours, Ethel Bolitho"
