John was one of three brothers who enlisted to serve in WWI.
Extracts from this letter
"We have been here a month, arrived at night and went ashore in parts, all the while gunboats lying near the beach were firing into the Turks, machine guns and rifles on the ridge were also rattling into them, bullets were whizzing over our heads all the while, they were stray bullets that were meant for the gulleys and ridges but came over to the beach, quite a number of the boys have been knocked out with these."
"I have had several lucky escapes. These bullets seem to come from everywhere, as we are in a half circle. The trenches are the safest places one can get..."
