Ears plugged

Harry Norton was killed in action on 15 September 1916, at Flanders. His family were not informed of his death for 5-6 weeks, and continued to write to him. Their letters were returned marked with 'deceased'. Harry wrote to his wife everyday - his letters are very descriptive and personal.

Extract from this letter

"We are right in the thick of it again. In the very heart of this Great War. You have read of the great results of the men from the land where Uncle Alfred is in. We are right there now, and will be for some weeks, I expect. We are doing splendidly. The big gun fire is terrific & I have my ears plugged with wadding."
