Extracts from this letter

"The cafes here are just like you see sometimes in the pictures ... It is great fun ... One has to be careful and not go about here by ourselves as it is not safe. One silly fellow committed one of the greatest crimes anyone can in this country. He pulled the veil of one of the women off and got a knife into him for it.."

"I was down Cairo again last night and I cannot express on paper the beauty of the place... I have heard that there is a NZ mail came in last night and I am all pins and needles waiting till it is sorted to get a letter from my darling little girl. I left you a boy dear and I will come back a man although a pretty rough one. I am not getting any tamer here... We get all these little tickets I am sending you out of cigarettes. I don't know why I am sending them to you. I suppose I must send you all these little things."
