Extracts from this letter

"The following day I went into the trenches and stayed there a week, snow fell all the while it was the worst weather they have had here. I was absolutely frozen and hadn't any sleep for four nights, my feet and hands got frost bitten and I am just getting right again... They are supplying us with rubber boots and capes..."

"Fleas and lice are in plenty here, and are the worry of our lives. I have not had a bath for about 6 weeks. Water is hard to get, we do not get a bottle full."
