Sham fight
Harry Hall was killed in action at Messines.
Extract from this letter
"I suppose you have heard about our route march from Tauherenikau. It took three days and we had a good time. We had two damn cold nights in the ti-tree and were called out at 2am Saturday morning to indulge in a sham fight ... In the butts, which are like trenches, we have to look up at the cardboard targets and then signal with flags on the end of long poles the result of the firing ... You see if we bobbed up our heads we would probably get shot ... When the bullets shoot overhead they sound like violin strings which have been hit."
