Tell her I am coming home
Harry Norton was killed in action on 15 September 1916, at Flanders. His family were not informed of his death for 5-6 weeks, and continued to write to him. Their letters were returned marked with 'deceased'. Harry wrote to his wife everyday - his letters are very descriptive and personal.
Extracts from this letter
"HURRAH I have just got your cable ... I am so glad & excited ... I have just been across the road to a beautiful Cathedral & gave thanks to God for the good news of you both [mother and baby girl]"
"You can just imagine my delight ... I do want to know what she looks like and a thousand other things. What colour eyes & hair ... Anyway Dear heart, you have got part of me, and now there is another bond to hold us closer together Chum. I thought we were all in all before, but this another proof of our love"
"Spoil her, kiss & cuddle her, & sing to her for Daddy, and tell her I am coming home just as soon as ever after I have done all I can for king & Country"
"Can you picture us all round the fire at night .... Well here I am sacrificing all this for duty, but without the duty done I could not have it. So my mind is easy, and there is joy to come of work well done."
