To my son
Harry Norton was killed in action on 15 September 1916, at Flanders. His family were not informed of his death for 5-6 weeks, and continued to write to him. Their letters were returned marked with 'deceased'. Harry wrote to his wife everyday - his letters are very descriptive and personal.
Extracts from this letter
"My old boy I am sure you are keeping your promise to me & looking after Mother"
"It will make home so happy if you are bright & cheerful & speak nicely and speak like a gentleman. You would be surprised how easy it is to pick out the gentlemen in our D Company."
"All the boys who have had good home training and have thought of the good & kind actions they can do to others, have grown up fine men and it is a pleasure to talk & work with them."
"When I come back I want to find you a fine boy and be proud of you. You know you can fight for your King & Country by being a good boy. Just as much as I can in Egypt ... Your Soldier Daddy."
