Eric died on the 7th of October 1916 during the Battle of Somme.

"I met Bishop who had just joined up and was posted to 4th Otago which is temporarily commanded by Lindsay Scott who was in the B.N.Z with me..."
"We go up into the Front Line tomorrow and so we are getting this opportunity of sending a mail ... I have no paper - except this field message paper - as everything is left in my field kit at divisional HQ as I was to come up for only one night. No one has more than the clothes he is wearing and his shaving gear and we all sleep in our clothes with only an overcoat over us."
