What a wondrous thing
Extracts from this letter
"Couldn't resist the temptation of taking French leave, donned my blues & overcoat, & walked out past the guard as though I had a pass. Walked to Walton & caught the train for London..."
"I have never seen such huge stations in my life. Arrived about 1 o'clock & what a scene it was. Flags in thousands on the engine carriages, in fact the whole station. ... I reached the Strand where the scene was undescribable [sic]. ... a seething mass of people wearing all sorts of decorations, a mass of colour & waving flags ... Everybody was in a state of madness, let themselves go, & I don't wonder, as what a wondrous thing it is, to think the war is actually over."
