Awaiting the order to charge
Harry Norton was killed in action on 15 September 1916, at Flanders. His family were not informed of his death for 5-6 weeks, and continued to write to him. Their letters were returned marked with 'deceased'. Harry wrote to his wife everyday - his letters are very descriptive and personal.
Extracts from this letter
"Just fancy after ten months training in a few hours I will be able to do my bit. I am very excited and looking forward to the moment, & order to charge. What a glorious time we will have making the fiends run. We will show them what we can do, you may be sure."
"Brute strength & perseverance is going to carry me through this job"
"It seems like heaven to think of a soft bed, white sheets & blankets, so clean & sweet and just fancy a table with a white cloth & cups & saucers & a tea pot, & best of all to have you, Dear old Girl fussing round"
"We will win for sure, and I will win my star on my shoulder too..."
