Those poor girls
Extract from this letter
"The transport was struck about 9am and went down in 7 minutes - the losses I won't talk about but those poor girls I will for what they went through was terrible. Ten were lost, 4 at present are here and very ill - the Matron has never spoken since - she went grey in one night, yesterday she was still very bad and I believe some of them to be invalided back to New Zealand - poor Rogers and Hilyard who were the life of 'Maheno' coming over; it was Rogers who made up those verses on 'Maheno' - both went down; Rogers and another unidentified washed ashore and both buried at Saloniki; Isdell has her arm broken - Fox they say her back was broken, another nurse both legs; Rattray had two nurses keeping her up for hours, they were holding on to spars and with hands crossed these girls kept Rattray up until she became mental and died of exhaustion. Rattrays are very good friends of Dr. Speddings. Hilyard sang Tipperary and 'Are we Downhearted' until she died."
