With you in spirit

Harry Norton was killed in action on 15 September 1916, at Flanders. His family were not informed of his death for 5-6 weeks, and continued to write to him. Their letters were returned marked with 'deceased'. Harry wrote to his wife everyday - his letters are very descriptive and personal.

Extracts from this letter

"There seems to be 2 of myself. I am doing my day's work & paying attention to every detail, yet underneath it all there is another me, just the same, but thinking, thinking of you all the time, and I am with you in Spirit and never seem away from you Chum. It is so strange, but I can control two lines of thought at the same time"

"I have no doubt that it is the Holy Spirit working in me. I try all day long to lead a Christian life. I have realised that God is watching over me and I am going forward from day to day so comforted & happy, and I know I will come safely through & home to you all."
